Blood Bank Technology

This group seeks to actively promote an awareness of the following:

  • Serological techniques 

  • Transfusion Laboratory automation and computerisation 

  • Blood grouping and antibody screening reagents 

  • Guidelines and legislation relating to the blood bank

  • Changes and developments to all of the above


The SIG is keen to provide a forum which is of relevance and interest to all hospital and blood centre transfusion professionals, and the SIG has established a reputation for holding meetings at the cutting edge of transfusion laboratory technology with lively discussions. 

The SIG operates at the interface between hospital transfusion laboratories, the blood transfusion services in the UK and clinical staff. The SIG Committee meets twice a year, usually in February and November to discuss changes and issues seen in laboratories, and to plan the scientific events later in the year.

The SIG hosts one of the opening sessions on the first day of the BBTS Annual Scientific Conference, which is usually very popular. A link to the program and presentations of the 2019 session can be found here.

Later in the year (usually November), the SIG jointly hosts a scientific meeting with UK NEQAS BTLP, covering common issues concerning laboratory staff and managers, career development, scientific updates and  interesting case studies. Information about the 2019 meeting can be found here.

Please note the 2020 SIG meeting  with UKNEQAS was postponed due to COVID-19 no details for 2021 are available at the moment.

In addition, the SIG has also been proactive in contributing to BBTS/BSH Guidelines on areas relevant to blood banking. The SIG Committee is represented by hospital and blood centre staff as well as specialist representatives from the IBGRL and UKNEQAS.
