Surface modification of platelet concentrate bags to reduce biofilm formation and transfusion sepsis
Dr. Kathryn Whitehead, School of Healthcare, Manchester Metropolitan University

Sex, drugs and rock and roll: how big is the risk and what are we doing about it?
Dr Su Brailsford, NHSBT
Intended Audience
Anyone with an interest in the fascinating world of microbiology
Learning Objectives
Blood safety, the need for further microbial interventions, the importance of biofilm formation.
Brief Description
Professor Zaaijer, world renowned microbiologist from the Netherlands, will discuss the microbiological safety of the blood supply. Do we really need to make it safer with additional interventions such as Pathogen Inactivation? Dr Whitehead, Manchester Metropolitan University, will present work on the reduction of bacterial biofilm formation in platelet component bags which poses a risk to patient safety. Dr Brailsford will present on sex, drugs and rock and roll and what are we doing about it, to prevent microbiological transmission.
